Back pain does not always mean surgery. But some symptoms mean you should see a specialist without delay.
Most pain gets better without surgery
A large share of new back pain eases within a few weeks with medication, gentle exercise and good posture.
Symptoms that matter
Increasing leg weakness, dragging a foot, loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness around the groin or back passage are urgent signs. Seek care promptly if they occur.
How the decision is made
Symptoms, physical examination and MRI are considered together. If pain keeps disrupting daily life despite proper treatment, or nerve compression worsens, surgery is discussed with the patient and family.
